Pubs in our country are a bit of a misunderstood concept. Its not necessary all the pubs to have hundreds of beers or a twenty pages menu. In the majority, the Greek consumers believe that a pub, means lots of beers bottled of draught and a huge menu with sausages and pork shank. There are a lot of times when the question “Where can I find a good pork shank?” has not a certain answer. It depends of the place they want to visit and of course the cook.
Of course when the cook is a professional and German, it’s hard for you to get disappointed. Erich, is chef for many years now. He lives in Greece twenty years now. He started visiting our country on behalf of big hotels, like Elounda Beach (where he met his wife, with which he has a daughter and two sons). His been through a lot of well known kitchens in Athenian pubs, in order to open his own amazing one and only München in Melissia in December of 2009. In his 48 years old Erich Lickert, from Freiburg, in the weekends he is working in his own pub and he is watching German football championship accompanied with his customers.
In a small place approximately 50m2, Erich build his own business which offers about 50 bottled beers along with 3 draughtt and all of them German! Every day from 2pm until 1am and Weakened from 12.30pm -1am or so depending on the customers. Inside there are only 4 tables, so a reservation is more than mandatory especially in Weekend and week days especially when there is football matches. As the customers are lots of times people who like to watch their favorite sport long with beer and pork shank.
The pork shank, which I tried many times, I haven’t found it anywhere else in Athens. I dare to say that when I have it in front of me I want to eat it until I blow. Its preparation is more or less known, but Erich never reveals his secrets. From where I should begin, the well baked crunchy crust or the tasteful warm meat, every time the same problem. I cut a piece and I combine it with sour cabbage and then a get the fork ready again, when that is already in its way to my stomach. In occasion I dip it into the spicy sauces which in order to “brake” them I eat some of the potato salad with the mayo. My advice: “steal” some of the snitsel of your friend, which fits perfectly with the potato salad.
With the willing not to underestimating the platter with the sausages, as well as all the other dishes of München cuisine (note that: the kitchen is open and everything is prepared in front of you), the pork shank (Schweine-Haxe or just Haxe) is the specialty. As much as I might know about beers or I have my preferences (I love Weiss and Lambic beers) I always let Erich to surprise me with his own suggestion, as regards accompanying beer with my food.
In the room the wood is dominated and German counters with corresponding tables, you will find many posters and banners on the wall, hundreds of glasses standing and watching everything. The staff is not famous for its Greek, however you can talk with them in English, if you do not know German. Among the customers that you will meet you will surely see that all have a German with them. Pleasant or unpleasant, smoking is prohibited in the area.
