The last few day’s great things are happening in the brewing industry in Greece. It’s a fact that during the last years the publicity of beer and the growth of the microbrewing gets the attention of more and more people.
Lots of consumers try new labels of beer, different from what they used to 5-6 years ago. The massive expansion of the microbreweries couldn’t leave untouched the bigger companies.
Lots of them are being compared (equally) with the green ones. There are more than 15 microbreweries in Greece while in 1997 we had only one. Those microbreweries have to fight with the bureaucracy, competition the lack of information and of course the legislature.
A good move in order this effort to get some support was the decision of creating the Association of Small Producers of Beer. After the Greek Brewers Association the similar association is being prepared for the smaller breweries a decision which I believe should have been done earlier, although in the past have been similar attempts.
This is a historic moment, which provided work will contribute to the rise of the microbrewery and will clear the way as regards the microbrewery beers.
Clarification of what craft beer is, under the foundation of the Association of Small Producers of Beer, comes at a time when the biggest multinational beer company is launching a new project. Without this meaning being judged. This movement confirms the tendency of consumers to craft beers.
The conclusion that one can reach is that Greece, although a wine country, is experiencing a “revolution” in recent years. The well-known abroad «beer revolution» has come to our country and has touched even the largest corporations. In any case, what every one of us who is dealing with beer wants is quality beer at an affordable cost and with respect to the product. These steps only positive can be considered.
