A development which should have already taken place. A document which places Greek microbreweries in the first phase of adulthood and maturity. That is how I personally see the decision to establish the Association of Small Producers of Beer. It is an announcement that sets the stage for the future of the Greek microbrewery.
The Greek Microbrewery is no longer a concept under deliberation. We aren’t talking about one or two microbreweries. In our country (Greece) there are more than 15 microbreweries in operation. Some have their own facilities some do not. This document helps clarify this point by stating that members of the Association of Small Producers of Beer may be those who produce beer by their own means.
The document in the same paragraph states that members will only be those breweries which produce 20.00hlt annually. Furthermore the statement points out that action will be a briefing will take in order to clarify the terms “Microbrewery” and “Microbrewery Beer”.
At this point a question arises. Does the 20.000hlt take into consideration all the labels that belong to the brewery, as well as, the labels that are produced by the brewery on behalf of others? Of course the microbreweries own labels are taken into consideration but what happens to the labels produced on contract? It goes without saying that such a company will not be a member of the Association of small producers of beer, because it doesn’t produce beer by its own means since it doesn’t have the facilities.
The intent to educate and inform consumers and tourism professionals is both agreeable and favorable. Promising is also the intent of the Association of Small Producers of Beer for various actions and support in the beer industry. I am optimistic because BeerBartender will have the A. of small producers of beer by its side and will be joining forces in spreading the culture of beer.
It is true that only some of those directly concerned were present during this preliminary action but the support from all those that weren’t able to be present because of work load or those who will be taking part in the future sends a positive message to anyone who is skeptical and suspicious about such actions. The establishment of theAssociation of Small Producers of Beer is a milestone in the history of Greek brewing. It is an action that lays the foundations for an organized and unified professional future. As the saying goes, “strength is in unity”.
For the record I mention that for this debate which was held in Athens on March 14, 2015 the following representatives were present: Pantelis Avramidis for Elixi Hellenic Brewery, Spyros Kaloudis for Corfy Microbrewery, Alexandros Kouris and Maya Tsokli for the Cycladic Microbrewery in Tinos, Sofoklis Panagiotou for Septem Microbrewery and Iakovos Amygdalos for the Chios Brewery. The following microbrewery representatives, who were unable to attend due to obligations, declared their support and interest were: Lionakis Yiannis for Cretan Brewery, Kostas Andonakopoulos for Patraiki Brewery, Yannis Marmarelis for the Siris Brewery and Yiannis Paraskevopoulos for Donkey, Santorini Brewing Co.
In the future I hope that other microbreweries such as Zeos Brewing Co, Brink’s, VAP, Korinthiaki, Ali, Microbrewery of Thessali, will become members. Moreover the intent is that, any others that will get established in the future and fulfill the conditions of membership will join the Association. Why shouldn’t they be interested in participating in a group that is in the making since the establishment of the Association of Small producers of Beer will definitely enhance the microbrewery dynamics.
