There are a lot of people that consider it as a basic category, but it’s not. Wrongly the Pils beers were called as Lagers or Ales. But let’s leave on the side the top fermented Ales and concern ourselves with the bottom fermented beers just like Pils and Lagers. Lagers are the well known blonds, such as Budweiser, Fosters, Stella Artois, Carlsberg and many more others. Subcategory is also the blond Pils, with the Paulaner Pils, Warsteiner, Krombacher, Jever and many Greeks.
This is one of the most popular beer styles in the world. It owes its name, in the first place where there were the first productions of a blonde foamy beer with strong bitterness of the hop (we need to emphasize that until then the Lager beers had dark color). The place is none other than the Pilsen , Czech Republic. In the Bohemian city Pilsen, the Bavarian brewer Josef Groll ( Joseph Gkrol ) decided to produce in 1842 , beer , which received the name of the city. The first and original beer of Pils, is Pilsner Urquell. The beer was exported as a Lager type or Export and many other areas outside the Czech Republic. Its marketable success was enormous. Many beers, especially German, were based on the same process and production mode of Groll and acquired the name Pilsner, Pilsener or just Pils.
In order to ensure this fatherhood, Czechs tried to earn a credential type PDO (Qualified Designation of Origin). That effort wasn’t successful and at that point we have to clarify that the original Pils are only those who produced in Pilsen of Czech and are labeled as “authenticated Pils”, Echtes Pilsener. If we compare and contrast a German with a Czech Pils, the Authenticate Czech blonde lady remains a mild beer, that the brewers invariably recognize as the mother of all beers in this category and clearly the experienced palate is perceived nuance.
The two thirds of worlds production is classified as Pils. Produced in different ways, in the whole world, even in Greece! The American breweries did not hesitate, during production, to add other ingredients such as rice or corn.
A Pils beer:
In Switzerland the corresponding term of Pilsner is Spezial. Within an interstate agreement that exists between the Czech Republic and Switzerland, Switzerland calls the Pils, Spezial and the Czech Republic does not use the name for Emmentaler cheeses. (As respectively with our feta white cheese)
Serve in glasses with neck (Footed Pils), but can be served in the famous glass with handle (Beer Mug). Usually we can find them in 250ml, 300ml and 500ml. You can still find and 400ml glass. Make sure you try local Pils beer in a visit to the Czech Republic.
The most famous Pils beers that we can find in Greece are: Beck’s, Fischer, Jever, Krombacher, Krusovice Imperial, Paulaner Pils, Radeberger, Veltins, Warsteiner, Amstel Premium Pilsener and of course including the “mother” of all Czech Pilsner Urquell.
In our country there is also produced several Greek Pils, such as Pils Hellas and the new “z” from EZA, Septem Monday’s Pilsner from Septem Microbrewery, Ionian Pilsner from Corfu Microbrewery, Zeos Pilsner from on the Brewery ZEOS, Volkan Blonde from the First Lomax, Nissos from the Cycladic Microbrewery in Tinos, DIONI- ORA from Patraiki Brewery, Voreia Pils from Sirris Microbrewery in Serres and the new Delphi in 750ml bottle from ELIXI. In our country is also produced the famous Amstel Pils and Fischer Pilsener from the Athenian Brewery and Kaiser Pilsner from the Olympic Brewery (ex. Mythos Brewery). Peiraiki Pils from Peiraiki Microbrewery is not producing any more are the brewery has suspend operation.
