The man behind STATUS beer belongs to the group of people that has grown up abroad. Germany in particular. STATUS beer is the venture of a 3rd generation Greek from Germany. It first appeared in the Greek market in 2009, mostly as a trial and this past spring it made a dynamic comeback. It’s a Greek company based in Thessaloniki but the beer is produced in a brewery in Bavaria, which dates back to 1380, under the supervision of Vassilis Stergiou. It is a small brewery which has around 15 employees and its production is quite limited.
Since 2009 the beer’s recipe is continuously being improved and tested, after all, Vassilis Stergiou is a man that knows beer not only because he grew up in Germany but mainly because he has studied the science of brewing. It is possible that after a few years the beer will be brewed in Greece. Rumor has it that it may be in the area of Paiania but nothing has been confirmed so far.
The production of beer takes several hours since the wort is the result of a triple infusion. According to Vassilis he follows all regulations regarding beer production according to the German Purity Law of beer. STATUS beer is a bottom fermented beer that is treated to a main fermentation temperature below 4°C, while other beers are fermented at 7-13°C. This temperature is of primary importance in the maturation of beer. Because of the low temperatures, even in the main fermentation, shelf life is increased and is responsible for creating a steady foam when served, which affects the taste characteristics in a positive way.
In a simple bottle without extra labels, only a blue label with its name and the face of Periklis around the neck STATUS Deluxe comes to the Greek market in order to create a new category, that of the Deluxe beers, it shouts and says “The first Greek Deluxe beer”.
When tasting the beer, I expected to see the rich long lasting foam that it is said to have. Truth be told, I was quite skeptical since I have heard about the many advertising tricks, but the white foam, with beige hues, was rather thick and had a sufficient duration. Several rings of lacing were left behind and remained (as long as there was beer in the glass).
It has as golden color, as seen from the bottle, with few bubbles. Medium body, with a good sense of carbonation. Aromas of malt, sweet grape, as well as herb-grass notes and fresh earth hit the nose. In the mouth I tasted citrus with malt and a few notes of grass. I also felt notes of hops in both cases. It’s a sweet beer, with a classic honey taste and a slightly bitter aftertaste, with a medium duration, dry aftertaste, with a constant change between sweet and slightly bitter.
Status beer is an easy drinking beer which can be enjoyed at a slightly cool temperature. It belongs in the Pilsner category. It is available in select liquor stores, restaurants and hotels, where it is sold only in 330ml bottles. Unpasteurized and filtered with an alcohol level of 4.9%abv it’s a delight to enjoy either during summer as well as winter. Based in Thessaloniki Status Beer Company Ltd.
