The red color has been connected in our minds with the blood of all creatures at nature. Red has been associated with sports, politics, traffic lights and also with beer. Hundreds of red colored beers exist. Others with lighter color, others with darker, more or less tasteful. But Greek Macedonian is only one.
The red beer of Macedonian-Thrace Brewery is known as Vergina Red. We tasted the beer for umpteenth time and concluded that this beer has no reason to be jealous of none of the famous beers of any part of the world.
Let’s provide you with some information about the brewery. Macedonian-Thrace Brewery was found at February 1998 at the Rodope area. In tradition is mentioned that at this was the place where the first Greek brewing made at the ancient times. The commercial name, Vergina, refers to the place where the grave of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, where found. Today, the brewery’s headquarters are in Komotini. It is producing original Greek beers under the guidance its founder Dimitris Politopoulos.
Vergina Red, isn’t so famous among the Greek consumers. That’s why Greeks show preference at blond beers like Lagers and Pils. Vergina is well known to Greeks, as well to visitors, for its name and stable quality. But enough with that, let’s talk about beer.
The foam of this beer has a long duration. Rich, with almost no bubbles showing up. Cramped, with a sugar cane color, not total white. As the name is declaring, it’s a red beer. Some brown highlits appear at the body, which is not 100% clear.
Fruit flavors are dominating at Vergina Red. Red fruits are coming in mind, red berries, tropical fruits and something of spicy. Our taste has a light bitterness, obviously from the hops, which is not disturbing for the common Greek tastes. You can anticipate some fruits again and you might feel some honey on your tongue and maybe a bit of vegetativeness. The beer has a dry ending in mouth. It’s a full bodied mild beer, which referred to me red roses. The presence of carbonation is not intense. The beer is made from blond malts, rare roasted and caramelized malts, hops and Tettnanger aromatic hops as well as yeast and what else, water. The alcohol is like a classic blond beer, near to 5%, however a range between 5% to 6% could be possible as a first impression. To be precise the abv of Vergina Red is 5,8%.
A Special Beer, according to Macedonian-Thrace Brewery, which essentially is a Red Lager. We tasted it from a 500ml bottle, at the temperature ≈6ΟC.
Vergina Red, isn’t the only beer of Macedonian-Thrace Brewery. The brewery is also producing a Lager and a Weiss, all are available in bottles and kegs. Vergina is available at many restaurants and snack bars and can be found at supermarkets or liquor-stores in bottles of 330ml and 500ml. The kegs of 30lt are available for professional use.
