It’s been a long time that I wanted to visit the brewery of Zeos in Argolida. I was planning it again and again and every time something was being in the middle. Something like the developments and other obligations that occur, and it took me so long to write my impressions about this visit in ZEOS, which I finally complete during my summer vacation.
After a meeting with Lefteris and our conversation with David, in a nice environment in the beautiful and historical Nafplion, we went to Inachos, a noon with lots of sun. The weather was mostly for the sea not for visits.
Zeos brewery is located in Inachos or Argolis, about 4km away from argos. Its producing the well known Greek beers from Argolida, but it also the brewery where Volkan is also brewed. The whole brewery is moving under the sleepless eye of Canadian David Wood. David has the role of director, brewer, chemist, taster and anything else that he can do. With him, lately, he has Lefteri. A man who has grown up at the area and it’s obvious from its work that he “hurts” for the product. The two of them are running all day long in the factory, seeing customers and co-workers and sometimes in their homes.
The brewery is approximately 600 sqm, it has seven tanks for beer, one for water and one more for the fermentation. Its production possibility is 2m liters. If they rich them their production will then be production of a brewery and not a micro-brewery. For ZEOS, are working apart from David and Lefteri five more people. On “hard” times, they hire five more seasonal. As it concern the brewery, is scheduled the research of a new place for the premises, so there will be more room and will be a benefit its growth and its entrepreneurial ventures.
The raw materials that the brewery is using to brew its beers are water from the Mills, a neighboring area, yeast from Germany and hops from all over the world. In order to brew Volkan they are using raw materials that are offered by First Lomax for their beers, as well as the costly installation to filter the water through volcanic rock. They are collaborating among others with the well known Greek companies, Gioula and Vitogiannis, for bottling their beers and seal them. Zeos wishes, soon to be able to use Greek barley, as they are already doing other breweries.
Today they are doing exports in Canada, USA (California, Florida and Washington) and in Greece we can meet them mainly in Attica, Thessaloniki and Patra. Grievance of David and Lefteris, is that there is no support from the community of Argolida. Thet feel that the attitude towards them and their product is prejudice and exploitation associated with the lack of information for entrepreneurs and professionals in the area.
ZEOS is producing on behalf of First Lomax from Santorini the series of Volkan beer (Blonde, Black and White). In their own portofolio we can find the Zeos Pilsner, classic in glass bottle, fresh beer in a plastic 1Lt bottle, Zeos MAK (Lager) and Zeos Black MAK.
